Research Visit to the Republic of Tanzania
Research Visit to the Republic of Tanzania
In early 2013, a working group under the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights undertook research on the human rights situation of indigenous peoples in Tanzania.

For the duration of two weeks, a delegation formed by the Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities met with representatives of ministries, embassies, UN agencies, international and local NGOs, including indigenous peoples’ organizations, and several indigenous communities from different parts of the country.

The report from the visit provides an analysis of the situation of both pastoralists and hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, including current challenges related to land rights, political participation, education, gender equality etc. It also looks into specific cases of human rights violations as well as positive government initiatives that could be further developed.

The report, which was adopted by the African Commission in 2014, also makes several recommendations to the Republic of Tanzania, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Development partners and to civil society organizations.
